The Urban Tiger Lap Dancing Club Wellingborough Road Northampton has applied for the annual renewal of its Sex Entertainment Venue licence.  Northants Green Party will be objecting to the renewal of this licence.

The Northants Green Party believes firmly in gender equality and campaigns for an end to violence against women and its causes.  We challenge the sexual objectification of women which takes place through the normalisation of the sex industries by many methods including lads mags, advertising, lap and pole dancing.

We are concerned about the damning messages and attitudes this sexual objectification of women sends about women’s status and value, and about male/female sexual identities and relations, and the effect it has on gender equality issues.

In May 2010 Northampton Borough Council decided to adopt the new law relating to lap dancing clubs.  This means that lap dancing clubs are now recognised as ‘Sex Entertainment Venues’ under the Policing and Crime Act 2009 which means that local people and local communities can have much more say on the opening of such clubs.

Many people feel that the Urban Tiger is in an inappropriate location and this is one of the main grounds allowed for objection under the new law.

The Urban Tiger is situated in a central area of town which is completely inappropriate for a sexual entertainment establishment.  It is surrounded by places frequented by children such as the school uniform shop and the Games Workshop, and is close to bus stops where women often have to wait alone late at night for transport home. It is close to residential properties and to places of worship.

Lap dancing clubs fuel a sexist culture in which it is increasingly acceptable to treat women as sex objects, not people. This has been recognised by the UN Convention on Eliminating All Forms of Discrimination Against Women as having clear links to discrimination and violence against women. Areas surrounding lap dancing clubs can become ‘no-go’ areas for women, with many women and girls reporting that they feel unsafe in the vicinity of such venues, and research reveals that individuals performing in the clubs face exploitative working conditions.  Research shows that the presence of lap dancing clubs increases the demand for prostitution services nearby.

Regulating the operation of lap dancing clubs is an issue of equality not morality.  The existence of sexual entertainment venues on our high street has a huge negative impact on women’s equality and women’s safety and this is why we are calling for this licence to be rejected.

If you feel that Northampton would be a better town without sexual entertainment on our high street then you have until 16th June 2013 to get your objections in.

When you write your objection it is very important that you include the fact that you are objecting to the renewal of the licence “on the grounds of inappropriate location” – this will avoid any objections being disallowed. You can then go on to explain why the location is inappropriate.  Also please include any other reasons you are objecting – particularly any personal experiences you have had such as being intimidated by people leaving the Urban Tiger or having to find different routes to avoid walking past it
